Today I did something I've been meaning to do for a while. I set up a Facebook group for parents who've completed an NVR parent group course or had one to one NVR support with an NVR practitioner as a parent or couple - a place to continue to learn about NVR, to check out things that feel uncertain, to share the successes and the struggles, and to build relationships with like-minded parents with similar parenting values.
All NVR parents are welcome - whether you've had NVR support from me or somebody else, whether you're an adoptive parent, kinship carer, or biological parent.
I'll be posting little bits of NVR related content regularly to the group but the space is intended as peer support for NVR parents. I post regularly on my Facebook page but that's a public space. This is a private space where it's safe to comment and chat more personally.
After finishing a group, or a block of support, parents often feel a bit lost. It's a bit like learning to drive - you really start to learn when you're out on your own and the instructor's disappeared into the sunset. So I'm going to be setting up a regular virtual drop in - a space to cover a theme, share current dilemmas, or just chat about the weather over a cup of coffee - so the journey feels a little less lonely.
It takes a village to raise a child, and that's a typical child. Most parents who seek out NVR support aren't parenting typical children in typical circumstances. The village is even more important yet more difficult to find.
