As babies and children learn new things, their brain grows. There's a time for learning different things and if the opportunity's there at the right time, the learning's easy. If the opportunity isn't there that learning is missed.
If as a parent learning new ways of doing things is hard, this is why. When we change old habits, our brain is having to make new connections and creating new pathways. This is also why doing things differently gets easier with time. We use the new pathways that are already there and don't have to keep making new ones.
So if it wasn't the way you were raised, or it wasn't the way you learned to parent, the next time you manage to:
stay calm
see things from your child’s standpoint
apologise
do something kind when you don’t really feel like it
set a limit and stick to it
and all the other lovely things you're learning to do
Know that you’re creating and new pathways - or strengthening existing ones - and it’ll just keep getting easier.
